How would you describe your first encounter with the graphic design profession?
When I think of my first design inspiration, I must really dig deep into my past, maybe as far back as my childhood. I vividly remember my first encounter with design as a small child passing by an art school on the streets of Saigon. Inspired by this brief encounter I later decided to embark on this journey of exploring the creative process and have devoted most of my life to generating ideas and creating art and design compositions that have laid the foundation for a professional creative career in Hildesheim, London, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Shanghai.
Do you remember your first project? Does it still have any significance for you?
Rather than focus on any one project, I prefer to stress my consistent evolution as a creative being, and professional, who has continually sought exposure to inspiring designers around the world. Design is a gradual process and sometimes there are some creative flashes that spark the right idea at the right time. The German university design program I attended stressed a clean, minimalist approach. This training significantly influenced my design style, as did my extensive immersion in the various cultures I have experienced throughout my professional and personal life. During my college years in Hong Kong I became fascinated with multiculturalism and that society’s unique approach to amalgamating Chinese characters with the Roman alphabet. This early experience in Hong Kong intrigued me so, that I recently returned to China after remaining in San Francisco for almost a decade.
If you had to choose, which one of your designs would you take with you to a deserted island?
I would find it difficult to choose just one design, since many of the more significant ones are those that represent a very emotional or spiritual event in my life. I would have to take several pieces that are likely to evoke cherished memories or prompt reminiscences about these events. Each composition tells a story and marks a particular time in my life. Some pieces have more meaningful stories and valued memories associated with them than others. During each era I have created design/art pieces that have left an indelible foot print in my life. During my early college years I created a myriad of graffiti master pieces that were imprinted on the walls of major cities. Some of my more memorable photographs are the ones I took during my stay in Lake Tahoe, California with its crystal clear water, heavenly blue sky, and amazing natural surroundings.
Where does your inspiration for your ideas come from?
In this day and age we are bombarded by a plethora of ideas and inspiration at every turn. Having worked as a designer in the advertising industry in the San Francisco Bay Area, the best inspiration was the city itself. My other source of inspiration derives from exciting modern day designers, architects, and both contemporary and classical artists from the European renaissance, such as Michelangelo and DaVinci, to modern artists such as Dali. I also derive a great deal of inspiration from the purest beauty of nature itself.
What significance does design have for you?
Being able to design and create your own world has always given me much satisfaction. Design literally means everything to me. It has shaped me into the person that I am now. Design is the lifestyle I live. My life is an ongoing design project that I have been working on since I was a child.
Design is a lifestyle and life for me is a lifetime design project that I've working on since I was an infant.
Is there anything you would like our customers to know about your design philosophy or approach?
Every piece of artwork that I design and execute narrates a story about the unique moment in time and place. My art represents a trinity of myself, in a particular time and space that converges to tell a unique story in the very moment the picture is captured. Of course the beauty and interpretation of any artwork is truly in the eye of the beholder.
Wir sind gespannt auf weitere Bilder und Kollektionen des Designers Minh Tang!
