Sliced Lamp Lampe Leuchte von Studio Mango

"Products have to have a meaning of existence. They should bring something new to the world and not just be a waste of resources and a burden to the environment. That's something we believe in, get a product because you love it and want to own it for the rest of your life, not because it is in fashion for the next 6 months."

When did you get for the first time into contact with design?
Paul: For me it was quite late actually (even though beneath the surface I have always been interested in it, making drawings, etc.). When I was doing my internship at Boeing in Australia there were a few engineers there working on the design of the plane. At that moment I did mechanical engineering and was working on the machines in the factory. What these guys were doing I found much more interesting so I asked them what they had studied, their answer was Industrial Design. From there on my interest only grew.

Frank: Design is everywhere around us, every single item has been designed by somebody which makes it quite difficult to answer this question. Although I always was fascinated by architecture of buildings and structures and finished my study Civil Engineering, I ended up studying Industrial Product Design. This was mainly due to my girlfriend’s sister who is working as a product designer at Philips and with whom I always had nice discussions about product design.

Do you remember your first draft? Does it still have any significance for you?
Paul: yep, we (Frank & me) approached a manufacturer of hospital beds with an assignment we had done at university. We never actually got to make the product of the assignment but we ended up designing and engineering all their hospital beds and accessories for nearly 4 years. We learned a great deal there, it was great.

If you had to choose, which one of your designs would you take with you on a lonely island?
Paul: Wow, in a way your products are a bit like children you have been working on (often) for years to perfect them before they are released and sold. So you’re putting me for a hard choice, but if I have to pick it’ll be the Persian Explosion carpet. Not only because it looks amazing, I could also sleep on it and because of the bright colors a pilot might see it from the sky and come rescue me.
Frank: I would take our NRGSPOT which has a solar panel on top and power sockets at the side , to charge up my cell phone’s battery ;-)

Where comes your inspiration from? Your ideas?
Paul & Frank: Day to day life, so many things happen around us which are inspiring. Especially when you travel you see so many interesting things. The best designs actually exist when I’m not working, that’s why I take a sketch book everywhere I go.

Can you tell me something about your philosophy or device you work with?
Pleasure, importance and interest - products have to have a meaning of existence. They should bring something new to the world and not just be a waste of resources and a burden to the environment. That’s something we believe in, get a product because you love it and want to own it for the rest of your life, not because it is in fashion for the next 6 months.

Is there anything you like to tell our customers?
Paul & Frank: Enjoy our work, we put our hearts and souls into it. Let us know if you appreciate it or if we can do something better.
