When did you get into contact with design for the first time?
Like many designers, I 'blame' Legos for my first interest in design.
 
Do you remember your first project? Does it still have any significance for you?
My first serious design was a chair - I learned with that project that chairs are perhaps the most challenging thing to design - virtually everything has already been done. To create a new chair that is not silly (3 legs? 5 legs?) or too similar to someone else's design is very difficult. Mine was not great but not too embarrasing for a beginner's work.
 
If you had to choose, which one of all your designs would you take with you on a lonely island?
None - I go to lonely islands to create new designs.
 
Where does your inspiration come from? Your ideas?
My inspiration and challenge comes from my attempt to equal or better the work of the masters who came before me. My ideas come from everywhere - I read, I look, I write, I think. I notice details and apply them out of context, I try to look at everything I see with fresh eyes.
 
What is the significance of design for you?
Everything man-made is designed, sometimes not very well. And often the worst stuff is labeled "design". We have a responsibility to create useful and beautiful things - that is design. I think we need a new word - "design" today means too many other things.
 
Is there anything you would like to tell our customers?
Buy less but better. And when you are done with it give it to your kids.
